BHUBANESWAR: Monsoon may reach the state in the next three-four days,
said H R Biswas, head of the regional IMD centre here, on Sunday,
bringing hope of relief from the prevailing heatwave.
There are
chances of relief from heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in coastal
pockets by Tuesday, when Rath Yatra will be held, Biswas said. On
Sunday, Puri recorded 35.1 degrees Celsius.
He said the situation
will be more clear on Monday. Biswas said the interior pockets will
witness heatwave till Tuesday. Thereafter, rainfall as well as
thunderstorm chances will likely increase at many places in the state by
Wednesday, he said.
All such forecast came on a day as Sambalpur
sizzled at 46C, the highest in the state. At six more places in interior
pockets, mercury was hovering at 45 degrees and above. On the other
hand, coastal pockets, compared to Saturday, witnesses slight relief
with the city recording a maximum temperature of 41.6C, seven degrees
more than the normal. Similarly, Cuttack at 40.2C, was six degrees above
the normal.
Additional special relief commissioner (SRC),
Padmanava Behera, said the suspected sunstroke deaths in the state has
reached 20 spread across 12 districts. Of them, only one heatstroke
death was confirmed from Balasore district. All other cases are under
inquiry.
Dhenkanal has reported the highest four suspected sunstroke
deaths followed by three in Balasore district. Ganjam, Sundargarh and
Sambalpur reported two cases each while Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada,
Sonepur, Bargarh, Jajpur, Cuttack and Balangir reported one each case,
Behera added.
